Here’s the philosophy: you’re being paid to learn, not to produce top-tier work. Your mistakes cost the business time and materials. So think of that lower wage as the price of an education that doesn’t leave you with student loan debt.
Plus, many apprenticeships come with perks: free tools, certification fees covered, or even a guaranteed job at the end. One plumber I know got his entire toolbox paid for. That’s like getting a $2,000 bonus disguised as a wrench set.

The “Hidden Wage” That Nobody Talks About
Let’s be real: the wage on paper might look sad, but the total package often includes things like mentorship, networking, and real-world skills. I once heard a carpenter say, “My first year paid for my coffee; my fifth year paid for my house.”
And don’t forget—many apprenticeships offer overtime at full rate after your first year. So if you’re willing to grind, you can actually catch up pretty fast. Pro tip: ask in the interview if overtime is available. It’s the difference between “I survive” and “I save for a car.”
