Council tax in 2026 will probably go up by about 4 to 5%, maybe a touch more in struggling areas. That’s roughly £8–£12 extra a month for the average household. It’s annoying, yes. But it’s also the price of living in a place where someone empties your bin, where the streetlights glow at night, and where a friendly librarian doesn’t judge you for that overdue copy of ‘The Thursday Murder Club’.
So go ahead, have a little grumble. But then make your money work for you—check your band, claim a discount, and hold your council accountable. And if all else fails, at least know that 40p a day is still cheaper than a parking fine. Small mercies, right?
