The movie’s setting feels like a dream version of 19th-century New York, but it’s a Frankenstein’s monster of locations. Barnum’s museum and circus in real life were on Broadway in Lower Manhattan—specifically at the corner of Ann Street. The film, however, gives us sweeping streets that look more like a soundstage in Moulin Rouge! than actual 1840s NYC.

You’ll notice the poverty is sanitized and the cobblestones are suspiciously clean. That’s because the movie was filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK, not gritty New York. The “city” you see is mostly digital backdrops and a few period-appropriate facades built in a parking lot.

Still, the vibe is pure New York ambition—a place where an immigrant’s son could dream big and lie bigger. Barnum himself grew up in Bethel, Connecticut, but once he hit Manhattan, he never looked back.
