Think of it this way: In the UK, 6 PM is a sacred hour. It’s when you pour your first glass of wine and watch the kettle boil for the third time. In the Canaries, 6 PM is pre-game warm-up. The streets are empty. Everyone is inside, having a nap or arguing about who should get the last slice of tortilla.
How do time zones work and why do we have them?
By 10 PM, the UK is winding down. You’re in your pyjamas, deciding if you can be bothered to watch the next episode. In the Canaries, 10 PM is when the real music starts. The plazas fill with families, friends, and the occasional donkey. Your pyjama plan is laughable.
So the time difference is zero hours, but the life difference is about four hours. It’s like living in the same time zone as a very energetic, late-night-loving cousin. You share a clock, but not a schedule.
The One Exception: The “Clock Change” Panic
There is one moment of pure, unadulterated panic. It’s the last Sunday in March. The UK springs forward, and you’re all set for an early flight. You double-check your boarding pass. You triple-check your watch. Then you remember: the Canary Islands also spring forward on the same day. Relief washes over you like a wave of cheap sangria.
But for a split second, you had a heart attack. You thought you were gaining an hour of waiting at the airport. You weren't. It’s the most British anxiety: worrying you’ll be late for a queue. In the end, the time zones are your friend. They’re simple, boring, and perfectly matched. It’s the only thing about the islands that doesn’t run on island time.
So next time you’re there, don’t worry about the clock. Worry about the rhythm. Your watch says 2 PM. Your soul says “maybe a nap?”. The locals say “lunch in a hour”. Just nod, order a coffee, and let the island do its thing. The time is the same. The rest… is just chaos.
