Fun fact: the World Series is not a world championship. It’s only North American teams. But in 1903, that was the world. No Japan. No Dominican Republic. Just the U.S. and Canada. So the name stuck, even though it’s a lie.
There’s also a rumor that the name came from a newspaper typo. A writer accidentally added "World" to "Series." Poof—legend born. Nobody can prove it. But it’s too good not to believe.
The Real Answer? It Depends.
So, how old is the World Series? If you count from 1903: 121 years (as of 2026). If you count from 1905: 119 years. If you count from 1884: 140 years. Pick your poison. But here’s the punchline: the actual number doesn’t matter.

What matters is the drama. The 1919 Black Sox scandal. Babe Ruth’s “called shot” in 1932. The 1994 strike that canceled it. The 2026 pandemic bubble. The Series has survived wars, strikes, and a global plague. It’s older than the NFL. Older than the NBA. Older than every major sport in the U.S. except horse racing.
