Scythe by Neal Shusterman. In the future, humanity has cured death. So you need professional killers—called Scythes—to keep the population down. The story follows two teenagers training for the job.
It asks deep questions about morality. It also has a character who gleefully quotes terrible poetry while murdering people. It is not serious. It is chaos.
Shusterman wrote the first draft in his car at a drive-in movie. He claims the film was boring. So he invented a new world. We thank that boring movie.
