Welcome to the large intestine, or colon. This is where the magic (and the shape) happens. Your body is a master resource manager, so it sucks up most of the remaining water here.

As water is removed, the leftover slurry starts to solidify. This is the exact moment it becomes feces. The colon’s muscles gently squeeze and sculpt it into that familiar log form.

Healthy feces are about 75% water and 25% solid matter. The solid part is a mix of indigestible fiber, dead bacteria, sloughed-off intestinal lining, and a little fat. Think of it as the body’s final report card.

Bacteria play a huge role. They ferment leftover fiber into gases (hello, farts) and produce short-chain fatty acids that keep your colon healthy. You are literally never alone in there.

The Grand Finale: The Rectum & Evacuation

Once the colon has a solid “package,” it sends it to the rectum. This is the waiting room. Stretch receptors in the rectal walls signal your brain: “Package ready for delivery.”

You then have a moment of choice. Hold it or release it. The external anal sphincter is under voluntary control—a clever design feature that prevents mid-speech accidents. When you allow the release, the internal sphincter relaxes, and the muscles push.

Gravity, abdominal pressure, and a squat-like posture make it easier. That’s why many cultures swear by the squatty potty; it straightens the angle of the colon, making the exit more efficient.
