Step one: squirm. Actually, no. Just provide water and mealworms. Dried mealworms are like bird candy. Toss a few on the lawn. Watch them gobble.
Step two: wait. Don’t chase. Birds hate that. Instead, sit still. Read a book. Pretend you’re a rock. Eventually, they’ll ignore you. That’s when you win.
Step three: install a birdhouse. Some of these birds love a cozy box. Others, like the Eastern Bluebird (which also has a rusty orange chest), are total snobs about nest shapes. Read the box instructions. Yes, really.
The Weirdest Name in the Squad
There’s a bird called the Varied Thrush. It looks like a Robin got into an orange-highlighter fight. It has a black band across its orange chest. It sounds like a flute being strangled. Haunting but beautiful. It loves mountain forests. Hard to spot, but worth the hike.
And let’s not forget the Black Redstart. It’s a dark bird with a bright orange-red tail. It twitches its tail like a nervous teenager. Constantly. “Did I leave the oven on?” energy.
