Jan Koum, a Ukrainian immigrant who grew up in California, wasn’t trying to build a billion-dollar company. He was just a grumpy engineer who hated missing calls from his gym because his phone kept dying. In February 2009, after buying an iPhone, he realized the App Store was about to explode—and he wanted in.

So on his 33rd birthday, February 24, 2009, Koum quietly registered the company WhatsApp Inc. in California. (Talk about a boring birthday present to yourself, right?) But here’s the kicker: he didn’t even have an app yet. It was just a name on a piece of paper. The actual first version of WhatsApp wouldn’t see the light of day for another few months—which makes the “birthday” date feel more like a legal footnote than a launch.

The “Launch” That Wasn’t a Launch

If you check Wikipedia, you’ll see the official launch date listed as May 3, 2009. Why? Because that’s when Koum finally uploaded WhatsApp 2.0 to the App Store. Version 1.0? That was a total disaster—it couldn’t even send messages properly. He actually considered quitting. Can you imagine? No WhatsApp, no group chats, no “seen” blue ticks that haunt your social life.

But then Apple introduced push notifications in June 2009, and suddenly WhatsApp had a purpose. Koum rewrote the app in a marathon coding session, and the real launch—the one that worked—happened later that summer. So when someone asks you, “When did WhatsApp launch?” you can honestly answer, “Pick a date, any date.”
