The judge has a few tricks up their sleeve to try and get the jury moving again. They might give the jury a new set of instructions, hoping to clarify any confusion or misunderstandings. Or, they might ask the jury to keep deliberating, giving them more time to think things through.
Sometimes, the judge will even question the jurors to figure out what's going on. Are they having trouble understanding the evidence? Are there any personal biases at play? By getting to the root of the issue, the judge can try to nudge the jury in the right direction.
But, if all else fails, the judge might have to declare a mistrial. This means the whole trial starts over from scratch, with a new jury and a clean slate. It's like hitting the reset button, giving both sides a chance to regroup and retry their case.
