While it looks tough, cauliflower ear isn’t always harmless. In severe cases, it can cause hearing loss, tinnitus, or chronic pain because the scar tissue compresses the ear canal. It can also make wearing earbuds or sunglasses a real hassle. Plus, if the cartilage becomes infected, you’re looking at a hospital visit and antibiotics.
One weird side effect: increased sensitivity to cold. The scarred tissue has poor blood flow, so your cauliflower ear can turn red and numb faster than the other one on a chilly day. Not exactly a superpower you want.
The good news is that most cases are purely cosmetic. If you’re okay with your ear looking like a wrinkled prune, and you have no pain or hearing issues, you can absolutely leave it alone. It’s your ear, after all.
