Fruit flies are not smart. I mean, their entire life plan is “find sugar, reproduce, die.” They’re basically tiny, winged toddlers with a drinking problem.

Apple cider vinegar smells like fermented fruit to them. It’s like the scent of a dive bar to a college kid who just turned 21. They cannot resist it.

But here’s the twist. The vinegar itself? It’s acidic. It’s a one-way ticket to Oblivion-ville for a fruit fly. They dive in for a sip, and they drown. Cue tiny, tragic violins.

It’s nature’s bartender serving a free beer with a poison chaser. Brutal. Effective. And you can do it in five minutes.

The classic “bowl of doom” method

Grab a small bowl or a jar. Pour in about an inch of apple cider vinegar. Just eyeball it—we’re not baking a cake here.

Now, add a single drop of dish soap. Seriously, just one. The soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar.

Why does that matter? Because normally, a fruit fly can land on liquid and skitter away like a little water spider. With soap in the mix? They sink like a rock. Plop. Gone. It’s like putting a booby trap on their swimming pool.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Poke a few small holes in the top with a toothpick. The smell wafts out, they crawl in through the holes, and… well, you know the rest. They never have to pay rent again.

If you’re feeling lazy (and I usually am), just leave the bowl uncovered. The soap does the heavy lifting anyway. But expect a few escape artists if you don’t use the plastic wrap trick.
