Here’s the simple truth, and it might surprise you: Ohtani has only played for two Major League Baseball teams. That’s it. Think of it like your favorite local diner that had one legendary cook, then moved to a fancier spot across town. The cook is the same, but the kitchen smells different.
He started his MLB journey with the Los Angeles Angels back in 2018. Before that, he was a rock star in Japan with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, which sounds like a cool name for a garage band. But his American debut was pure chaos in the best way—like showing up to a potluck with a five-course meal when everyone else brought chips.
The Angels Years: The “He Does What?!” Era
From 2018 to 2026, Ohtani was an Angel. And let me tell you, watching him play for the Angels was like owning a vintage Ferrari that only drives on Tuesdays. He’d pitch like a cyborg, hit home runs like they were free samples, and then casually walk to the outfield. It was absurd.
Remember that time he struck out 10 batters and then hit a 450-foot dinger in the same game? It felt like watching a cat play the piano—impressive, confusing, and you’re pretty sure it shouldn’t be allowed. The Angels were fun but never quite championship material, like a really good improv comedy troupe that forgets the ending.
You’d sit there with your nachos, thinking, “This guy is doing the job of two humans. Why isn’t this team winning more?” It was the baseball equivalent of ordering a gourmet burger and getting a perfect patty on a soggy bun. Still delicious, but you wanted the whole package.
