You’ve got three ways. Visual: the vibrant orange will deepen, and the edges might look slightly translucent. Texture: the fork trick, obviously. Sound: okay, that’s dumb, but if it squishes when you poke it, you’re golden.
Also, trust your nose. When butternut squash is done, it releases a sweet, nutty aroma that smells like autumn in a pot. If it smells like wet cardboard, you’re undercooking your life. Keep going.
The “What Now?” Step
Once you drain the cubes, don’t let them sit in the colander. They’ll steam themselves into glue. Toss them with a bit of butter, salt, and maybe a pinch of cinnamon if you’re feeling fancy. Or, if you’re me, just eat them straight from the colander while standing over the sink. No judgment here.
Boiled diced butternut squash is your blank canvas. Toss it in salads, mash it into risotto, or blend it into soup. Just remember: 7 to 10 minutes. Set a timer. Fork it. Don’t overthink it. You’ve got this—and now you’ve got a story about my anxiety too.
Now go boil something orange. I’ll be in the kitchen, timing my own cubes.
