A brand-new private might make around $250 for that weekend. An officer with some stripes? They could pull in $800 or more. It’s not a fortune, but it’s free money for playing soldier on a Saturday.
The Two-Week Adventure
There’s also the “Annual Training” — two weeks every summer. For that, they get full-time active duty pay. It’s like a summer camp, but with more push-ups and MREs. That two-week check can be chunky, especially compared to their day job.
Here’s the fun part: a Guard member can be an accountant during the week. Then on Saturday, they’re a helicopter mechanic earning a second paycheck. It’s a bizarre, wonderful double life.
