Built in 1906, this place was the beating heart of the Longbridge Austin car plant community. Think massive machines, grimy overalls, and the beautiful noise of British manufacturing. The men built cars; the club built camaraderie.

You can still feel that energy in the wood-panelled bar. It’s not haunted in a spooky way—more like a warm, smoky echo of past conversations. “Fancy a game of darts, Dave?” is still the most common ghost you’ll hear.

The “Institute” part sounds terribly posh, doesn’t it? It’s not. It means they had a library and offered educational classes. Don’t worry, you won’t be quizzed on algebra. The only test here is how quickly you can get a round in.

What’s Actually Inside?

First, the bar. It’s cash-only half the time, which is a delightful throwback. The landlord might give you a look if you tap your phone. “Sorry, love. The machine’s feeling poorly today,” he’ll say. Legend.

The beer is cheap. Like, offensively cheap compared to the city centre. You’ll get a proper, cold, no-nonsense lager. Or a bitter that tastes like it’s been poured from a wooden barrel of British pride. That’s value.

Then there’s the lounge. Big, chunky sofas where you sink down and never want to leave. And a stage. A proper, elevated stage. It’s where the bingo caller becomes a king, the karaoke becomes a tragedy, and the local band tries to play “Mustang Sally” for the fifth time that month. You’ll love it.
