Ninety-nine percent of the time, your water meter is either in the front yard near the street or in your basement. If you live in a warmer climate, the front yard is the top suspect. If you’re in a place where pipes can freeze into ice sculptures, it’s almost certainly inside, usually in the basement or a crawl space.
Think of the meter as a shy introvert at a party. It wants to be near the action (the main water line from the street) but not in the middle of the dance floor. It’s usually tucked into a concrete box with a metal lid that says “Water” or something equally cryptic.
Look for a small, round, or rectangular metal cover in the grass near the curb, between the sidewalk and the street. It’s often a different color than the surrounding concrete or grass, like a poker chip that got left behind.
The Basement Blitz
If the front yard is a bust, head inside. In a basement, the meter is usually on the front wall, closest to the street. It will look like a brass or plastic contraption with a dial or a digital display, and it’s usually attached to a big pipe that says “Hello, I’m the main water line.”
Sometimes it’s hiding behind a pile of holiday decorations or inside a little closet that you assumed was for storing canned beans. Pro tip: if you see a pipe with a shut-off valve (a big round wheel or lever), your meter is probably a foot away from it.

I once found mine behind my water heater, which was wrapped in a dusty blanket like a forgotten grandparent. It felt like an archaeological discovery.
