Also, if you’re making pasta or boiling veggies, softened water can make them a little mushy. The sodium reacts with the starch and turns your al dente pasta into sad, limp noodles. Save the soft water for washing, not for pasta perfection.
And finally, if your water softener hasn’t been maintained in a while—say, it smells like a swamp or looks like cloudy soup—don’t drink it. That’s not a water problem; that’s a “call a plumber” problem. Clean equipment equals happy tummies.
