Watch out for plastic cutting boards, kids’ sippy cups, and reusable containers. They can’t handle the high heat needed for disinfection. Wash them in hot, soapy water, then soak them for 10 minutes in a solution of one tablespoon of unscented bleach per gallon of boiled water.
Rinse thoroughly with boiled water after. Yes, it feels over-the-top, but it’s better than a side of bacteria with your salad. And hey, it’s a great excuse to finally toss that warped plastic spoon from 2019.
The Towel Trap
After washing, your dishes need to air dry completely. Bacteria love a damp towel. Use a fresh, clean towel or paper towels to dry them, or let them sit in a rack overnight.
