First, take a deep breath. It’s not brain surgery. You just pull out the old filter basket (that little black plastic thingy in the water reservoir), pop out the old filter, and soak the new one in cold water for 15 minutes. Yes, you have to soak it. That activates the charcoal so it actually works.
Then pop it back in, run a quick water-only brew cycle (to rinse the dust off the new filter), and you’re back in business. Your future self will thank you when that first sip doesn’t taste like pennies.
A Word on Hard Water
If you live somewhere with famously “hard” water—you know, where your showerhead looks like it’s wearing a white sweater?—you might need to change your filter every month. Hard water accelerates the gunk factor. If you ignore it, your Keurig will start brewing with the enthusiasm of a sleepy teenager on a Monday morning.
Check your water. If it leaves spots on your glasses or makes your soap feel gritty, treat your filter like a monthly magazine subscription. Cancel late, and you miss the good stuff.
