Let’s talk about Somalia. Pirate jokes aside (and please, let’s keep them aside), the country faces serious issues with terrorism and violent crime. Even the most adventurous backpacker would be wise to skip this one for now.
Libya is another gritty situation. The political landscape is a mess, and militias have more sway than tourism boards. You might get a great selfie with ancient ruins, but you might also get kidnapped for a ransom. Not Instagram-worthy.
And Mali? Beautiful culture, amazing music, but also active extremist groups in the north. Local travel warnings are red flags that you should absolutely not ignore unless you want to become an international news headline.
What About Places You Know Are Risky?
You’ve probably heard about Ukraine and Russia right now. With active war zones, travel insurance companies won’t even touch you. It’s like trying to have a picnic in the middle of a demolition derby—just a terrible idea.
