You do the swim, you stagger out, and your legs feel like they belong to a newborn giraffe. Your hands are claws, and your speech is limited to “G-g-good? D-d-did I do good?” But then, something magical happens. You wrap yourself in a towel—a big, fluffy, bath-sheet-sized triumph—and you walk to the on-site café. And you order. The. Hottest. Tea. In. The. World.
That first sip of tea, while you’re still vibrating from the cold, is a transcendent experience. It’s better than any spa treatment. It’s better than winning the lottery (I assume). Your body heats up from the inside, and a massive, goofy smile spreads across your face. You feel like a superhero who just fought a water monster and won. Ptp Coaching even sells hoodies that say “I swam in Beckenham Lake,” and wearing one is basically a badge of honour.

Surprising fact number two: The history is wild.
Here’s a curveball for you. The park itself used to be the private estate of a Scottish sugar merchant named John Cator. The lake was built in the 18th century for aesthetic pleasure, not for turning humans into human-shaped ice cubes. Fast forward 250 years, and the same lake is now used for “ice mile” attempts, where swimmers try to complete a mile in water under 5°C (41°F). Ptp Coaching actually runs Ice Mile training sessions. I met a woman there who had swum in a fjord in Norway. I, meanwhile, was proud of making it to the pontoon without crying.
Also, the park has a golf course. So you can literally do nine holes of golf, then go scream as you jump into a cold lake. It’s the most British afternoon out since someone invented the pork pie.
