To mark another player means to guard another player.

11. Clean Sheet
This refers to a shutout game or game in which one of the two teams doesn’t allow a goal. The term is thought to refer to the time when scores were tallied by hand and the shut out team’s “sheet” remained “clean” at the end of the game.
