15. Hedda Nussbaum
In 1988 Hedda Nussbaum became the face of battered women when her then husband, Joel Steinberg, beat their daughter 6-year-old daughter Lisa to death. Nussbaum was initially accused of being an accessory to the murder but charges were dropped when doctors testified that she had been so severely brutalized by Steinberg that she was incapable of participating in or preventing her daughter’s death.
