October 5 marks the 150th birthday of Louis Lumiere, the man who created the first motion picture camera and believe it or not, with the advent and abundance of today’s tech gadgets, DIY filmmaking is easier than ever. Things have changed a lot over the course of the past century, so while some of Lumiere’s rules still hold true—such as hold the camera steady, use good lighting, tell a good story—others are a thing of the past.
