14. Obesity.
Adults and children who are overweight have a greater risk of type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood and is the result of your body’s inability to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is much more common and occurs when your body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use it properly. As many as 90% of the people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are also obese and more children are developing this disease.

15. Family history plays a role.
If your parent or grandparent, sibling or other relative has diabetes, you’re at double the risk. If your doctor doesn’t offer to screen you for the disease, ask for a test and insist on it for your children.
