5. Elizabeth Smart
In 2002 Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped by Brian David Mitchell, who did odd jobs for the Smart family. Elizabeth’s kidnapping was witnessed by a younger sister who pretended to be asleep while Elizabeth was taken. After months of abuse and brainwashing by her captors, Elizabeth was recognized on the street after an airing of America’s Most Wanted. Mitchell is serving a life sentence and his wife 16 years for the crime.
