3. Elisabeth Fritzl
Elisabeth Fritzl disappeared in 1984, at the age of 18, and reappeared 25 years later in 2008. Her father had kept her chained in a basement where he repeatedly raped her and whose seven children she bore. Josef Fritzl told his wife and family that Elizabeth had run away and produced letters from Elizabeth as proof. He was sentenced to life in a psychiatric facility and she and the children who survived have been given new identities.
