This sport has been around for decades, first gaining popularity in 1960s Hawaii surf culture. Since then it’s had a moment or two in the sun but in the past few years everyone’s getting on board with the board. Crain’s recently said of SUP: “The sport has almost doubled in popularity from 2010, when it was first tracked by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Outdoor Foundation’s annual outdoor sports participation report, through 2013, when it hit nearly 2 million U.S. participants.”
