7. What is Solanine?
Solanine is the toxin (Glycoalkaloid Poison) contained in nightshade vegetables including potatoes. It is known to have caused food poisoning and other issues but has a purpose for the plant as it protects the vegetation from insects and predators. It is a less commonly known fact that potatoes produce compounds called glycoalkaloids that have been shown to be toxic to both to man and to animals.
