Celebrity news sources like People and TMZ are forever trying to show us the secret life, and the private side of celebrities. Years ago, before we knew where they shopped, ate and hung out all the time, it might have been easier to keep friendships under wraps, especially more bizarre ones—but thanks to the good old Internet, now we know everything. The paparazzi and 24-hour entertainment news outlets need new material all the time, and no tidbit, however trivial, is left unreported. And then there’s the public with smartphones always at the ready. So we’re sorry, celebrities. You can run but you can’t hide.

Sometimes the most famous unlikely friendships come from working together on set or performing a duet together; other times it’s having a cause in common or a shared political persuasion. And then there are those rare instances of odd celeb friendships that can truly not be explained (or fathomed) by the rational mind. So here’s our list of 20 unlikely friendships. You might remember some of them—others will likely just make you say “huh?”

Also, Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields, Michael Jackson and Macaulay Culkin, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor. Michael Jackson and everybody. It’s kind of sad when you think about now, but the King of Pop probably just wanted everyone to be his friend.
