Urge your child to show up on time, listen, pay attention, participate, and work to the best of his or her ability. There will be other students who goof off, cause trouble, complain and become dead weight in the classroom. Tell your kids to stay far away from them and to focus on their own potential and goals. Summer will go a lot faster if they keep busy with meaningful work.

If your kid is a college-aged student, then summer school is a chance to learn in smaller sized classes, interact more closely with faculty, and get a head start on your fall course-load. Instead of fooling around all summer, students can work towards completing their major and maybe even graduating early (and therefore saving thousands of dollars on tuition). Not that we’re pushing anyone to leave college before it is absolutely necessary…but it is certainly a nice option depending on your financial situation.

Bottom line: summer school for kids is not the worst thing that can happen to your child; in fact, it might be a really great experience. Your job as a parent is to make sure they realize this, to help them recognize all the benefits and opportunities they are being given as a summer student, and above all, to give them confidence to succeed in everything they do.
