4. Why have a canal?
This may be one of the most important of all Panama Canal facts. Before the canal, ships had to sail around Cape Horn to transport freight from New York to San Francisco. Depending on the weather, the hazardous trip could take up to eight months. The canal shortened the trip by 7,872 miles and it only takes 8-10 hours.
