Not that there’s any such thing as a “good” cancer, but ovarian cancer is a particularly nasty one. It’s the leading cause of cancer deaths in women, and its 5 year survival rate is less than 50%. When you consider that nearly 90% of women with breast cancer will survive 5 years or more, the statistic is all the more frightening. Even more disturbing is that ovarian cancer has a very low rate of early detection—because there are no overt symptoms it can easily go undetected until it is too late to be effectively treated. Hence its moniker, the “silent killer.” There are, however, warning signs that you can watch for, and groups thought to be at particular risk for developing ovarian cancer.
