Fall Fashions

UPDATED November 1st, 2017

As much of the country swelters under record-breaking heat, thinking about cool fall, moonlit nights may be just what we all need. Jacket weather’s right around the corner and fall fashion trend reports have hit the newstands, so it’s time to start planning a little wardrobe rejuvenation. Despite the dismal economy (or perhaps to distract us from it) designers have offered up a bounty of cozy, wearable, and brightly colored clothes this season. Luckily, you don’t need to buy haute couture to remain au courant. Translate these runway looks into real life without a closet revamp.

Tartans & Plaid are so evocative—conjuring up images of Catholic school-girl uniforms, ‘80s post-punk glam, ‘90s grunge, and in 2011—playful chic. On the runways it ran the full gamut, so wear whatever plaid you please. Shoes and accessories are an easy way to infuse your wardrobe with pattern.

The Buttoned-Up White Blouse is a modern classic; the contrasting bow adds a dash of old-school elegance, and the result is refreshingly modern. Pair it with black trousers or a dark skirt for a sleek, pulled together look.

Unexpected Color Blocking is a brilliant combination of retro mod and futuristic. And it’s easy to create your own version with clothes already in your closet. An extra wide citrusy belt breaths new life into a minimal cabernet sheath. Or try layering it with a rich cocoa colored cashmere cardigan and tights. Go as bright as you dare or as muted as you like. Limit your palette to one or two colors to avoid looking like you’re ready for Carnivale.
