On May 17, 1875 the first Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs. On that date, the horse Aristides, owned by H.P. McGrath, and his rider, Oliver Lewis, crossed the finish line before anyone else and the rest, as they say, is history. The Derby is now, of course, a historic event in fashion, sports and American history.

Something that is still prominent today but dates back to those early years is equestrian inspired fashion. We don’t recommend going full Derby attire for work (though for a Garden Party, we wouldn’t blame you!), but ensembles, accessories and individual articles of clothing inspired by the garments worn by the riders of those beautiful horses actually make great workwear!
