5 Summer Hair Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making

We reached out to stylist Yohayne Garcia, owner of “Nu Style” hair salon in Elizabeth, NJ and hair color expert for Alfaparf Milano, to get the scoop on the most common hair mistakes Latinas make in the midst of a heat wave. There is only one month left of summer, so make the most of it! With just a few quick fixes, you can have the pelo you always dreamed of!

1. You turn the flat iron up too high.
These days, most flat irons go up to 450 degrees for that extra heat to get hair straighter, faster. But this is probably the most fatal hair mistake we make, Garcia says. “We have a tendency to think hotter is better, that the hotter it is the straighter the hair will be, but that will only damage your hair.” She recommends not turning your flat iron up more than 350 degrees and always using a heat protectant.
