Save Your Hearing Day is May 31 and we’re celebrating by reminding you to keep your television and music volumes down! That’s just part of it though, really. Your hearing is an integral part of how you function day to day and it’s critical that you care for it! You can start by wearing ear plugs at your next concert and turning down the tunes on your iPod next time you go for a run. Protecting your hearing (and your children’s hearing) is one of the smartest things you can do as hearing loss is a sad fate that we would wish upon no one. Even the rock stars who may have inflicted it upon us, as Pete Townshend confessed, “I have terrible hearing trouble. I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal proponents deaf.”

In honor of Save Your Hearing Day, with the intention of informing you without freaking you out, here are 15 auditory illnesses you’ve probably never heard of.

15. Ménière’s Disease
This is one of the saddest of these auditory illnesses as scientists don’t know the cause and doctors have no cure. It can cause dizziness, hearing loss and tinnitus (a roaring sound in the ear). It is diagnosed with a physical exam and evaluation of symptoms and is poorly understood in the medical field.
